Hi I’m Sue and consider myself to be very fortunate living and painting in the beautiful Shropshire hills. I’ve spent many years walking and cycling amongst this diverse and engaging landscape. The changing seasons provide endless inspiration and possibilities. Ideas present themselves continually whether it be studying clouds, tree form, landuse or the skyline.
In addition to painting landscapes, I very much enjoy depicting still life and the challenge of putting together a composition, considering how it can be viewed in different ways, either by what is put together or how it’s painted. A lot of time is spent assembling objects, taking photos, exploring different angles, with lighting and shadows being an important component, before settling on a composition .
I’m very often distracted by an object or scene, the lighting or reflections, and see a painting waiting to have a go at.
My abstract work has given me the opportunity to deconstruct images and explore how far that can go. The possibilities are endless.
Experimentation is key, Painting takes me on a journey, there’s so much to explore, it’s not a static process, whether that be developing or trying new techniques, embracing new subject matter, working to a different scale and simply enjoying and setting my own challenges.
Oil is the medium that suits my style which sometimes can be quite developmental and evolve over time. Starting with a limited colour palette, the mixing and creating my own palette is fun . Colour tends to be bold and that together with the use of media to slow down or speed up drying to give opacity or gloss is another area to experiment with. Whatever seems appropriate or interesting at the time. Using brushes or palette knives provide an opportunity to work with either a very smooth approach or conversely a thick textured impasto.
I’m open to commissions if it’s to paint your favourite view or scene, collection of objects or food.
Most of the pieces of work are also available as fine art giclee prints and cards. See individual sections for information.
